The Complex Story Behind a Deep Eutectic Solvent Formation as Revealed by <scp>l</scp>-Menthol Mixtures with Butylated Hydroxytoluene Derivatives

An in-depth study of the hydrophobic eutectic mixtures formed by l-menthol (MEN) with butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), 2-tert-butyl-p-cresol (TBC), and p-cresol (PC) compounds has been carried out, where TBC PC are analogous to BHT species but a different degree steric hindrance around hydroxyl group. Thermal characterization evidenced that BHT/MEN system can be classified as an ideal eutectic, while TBC/MEN PC/MEN behave type V deep solvents (DESs) for wide range compositions point. As shown array experimental theoretical methods, in establishment hydrogen-bond (H-bond) interactions between components is dramatically hampered because molecule, so achievement liquid phase at room temperature composition driven apolar–apolar attractions among alkyl functional groups constituents. Differently, TBC-MEN donor–receptor H-bond main driving force formation DES derives from concurrence electronic factors characterizing molecule. Finally, absence group allows self-association molecules through H-bonded networks already pristine compound, replacement more favorable PC-MEN provides upon mixing these components. Our combined approach, together peculiarity inspected systems, delivered archetypal able shed light onto various contributions ruling structure–properties relationship DESs possibly deepening currently accepted view inherently complex media.
